Dad Says Amy Winehouse Has Emphysema
Amy Winehouse's dad says the British singer is being treated for emphysema, a potentially deadly lung disease. Amy damaged her lungs badly by smoking crack cocaine and cigarettes, her father told London's The Sunday Mirror.
"The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs, it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her," Mitch Winehouse was quoted as saying.
Amy's publicist confirmed that the 24-year-old "has an early form of emphysema. It's totally reversible and she's responded well to treatment." But according to the American Lung Association, this kind of damage to the lungs is irreversible.
The "Rehab" singer collapsed at her north London home Monday after signing autographs for a group of fans and was taken to the London Clinic where she remained all week.
Amy is still scheduled to perform at a London concert celebrating Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday this Friday and plans to take part in the Glastonbury music festival the following day.
