Amy & Kanye Win Big At The Grammys!

February 11, 2008

The 50th annual Grammys had many high notes, but one singer stood out amongst the pack. Troubled singer Amy Winehouse was the queen of the night, taking home five awards (she was nominated for six), including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist.

Winehouse, who was unable to make it to the awards because of issues with her visa, accepted her awards and performed two of her hits via satellite from London. "It's a shame I couldn't be there to accept the awards, but I'm so proud and happy that I had the opportunity to perform for the Grammys and in my hometown with my friends and family around me."

Another big winner of the night was Kanye West, who took home three awards (he was nominated for eight), including Best Rap Album. But it was his emotional performance of "Hey Mama" in honor of his late mother Donda West that brought many to tears, including Kanye, who had "Mama" shaved into the back of his head. "I know you're really proud of me right now and I know you wouldn't want me to stop and be the No. 1 artist in the world," said West. "Mama, all I'm going to do is keep making you proud."

Justin Timberlake, who was a no-show to the awards, took home two Grammys. American Idol alum Carrie Underwood won two awards for "Before He Cheats," which she also performed.

Alicia Keys, who won an award for "No One," performed the smash hit with friend John Mayer on guitar. Keys also opened the show with a "virtual duet" with the late Frank Sinatra.

Other memorable performances of the night were Beyonce and Tina Turner teaming up for "Proud Mary" and Rihanna's medley of her hits "Don't Stop the Music" and "Umbrella," the latter for which she took home her first ever Grammy. "Dad, I know I promised you I'm going to give you my first Grammy," Rihanna said in her acceptance speech, "but we might have to fight for this one."
