Update: Heart Disease Likely Killed Billy Mays
Billy Mays, the popular and bombastic TV pitchman who pushed everything from stain removers to kitchen gadgets, likely died of a heart attack in his sleep not a bump on the head a medical examiner said Monday.
Billy, 50, was found unresponsive in his Tampa, Fla., home on June 28. Although additional tests need to be performed, Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Vernard Adams said Mays suffered from hypertensive heart disease, and the wall of the left ventricle of Mays' heart and the wall of one of his arteries were enlarged.
The M.E. said an official cause of death will be issued after toxicology and other tests are completed in eight to 10 weeks. He did says Billy was taking the prescription painkillers Tramadol and hydrocodone for hip pain — he was even scheduled to have hip-replacement surgery Monday — but there was no indication of drug abuse.
Billy's autopsy showed no evidence of head trauma, although he had reported being hit on the head by falling luggage the day before when the plane he was on made a hard landing at Tampa International Airport.
"While it provides some closure to learn that heart disease took Billy from us, it certainly doesn't ease the enormous void that his death has created in our lives," Billy's wife, Deborah, said in a statement. "As you can imagine, we are all devastated."
