ANNA NICOLE'S SHOCKING TRAGEDY: SON DIED IN HER HOSPITAL ROOM, SOURCES SAY

September 11, 2006

In just one horrifying moment on Sunday, Sept. 10, Anna Nicole Smith's life — often bizarre and improbable — took a shocking turn for the unimaginably tragic. Just three days before, the 38-year-old former Playmate of the Year had delivered her second child, a 6 lb. 9 oz. baby girl, by C-section, in private Doctors Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas. And on Sept. 9, her beloved son, Daniel Wayne Smith, had flown in to be with his mom and meet his brand-new baby sister. "Saturday was the perfect day," Alex Goen, CEO of TrimSpa (for which Anna Nicole is the spokesmodel), told Star. "Anna was exuberant. She and Daniel celebrated the birth of her baby in her hospital room. They were both holding the baby. He was really happy and looking forward to being a big brother."

But at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Anna Nicole found Daniel motionless in her hospital room. Thinking at first that he was asleep, she tried to wake him up. Then, says a source, "She made a desperate effort to revive Daniel." Another source says that Anna Nicole began "yelling and screaming, calling for nurses and anyone around to help." The staff came running — to no avail! Daniel, born when Anna was just a 17-year-old dropout in Mexia, Texas, could not be revived and was dead from a reported heart attack at the age of 20.

"Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son," Howard K. Stern, her attorney and close friend, said in a statement. "He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being." Stern also said: "We have yet to learn the cause of death, but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor."

But on Sept. 12, the Nassau Guardian newspaper in the Bahamas quoted "sources close to the case," who claimed that "preliminary investigations revealed that ... drugs were found in his system." The source told the Guardian: "All we know right know is that he was on anti-depressants."

The paper also cited sources that say that Daniel was "reportedly vomiting uncontrollably shortly before he collapsed and died." The source told the Guardian that Smith "went into a violent rage helplessly trying to revive her son" and "fought with doctors in the room to get closer to her son's lifeless body."

Anna had chosen to have her baby in Nassau, sources tell Star, because it offered her a chance for a quiet birthing experience, out of the spotlight and away from the turmoil of her disagreements with photographer Larry Birkhead, the baby's father, who exclusively told Star, "On a day that I should be overwhelmed with joy, I'm shocked and saddened by the loss of Daniel." But at a press conference Prime Minister Perry Christie told reporters that Smith was "granted permanent residency last week." Sources also told the Guardian that the former Playmate of the Year had recently purchased a home on the island.
