Cheri

By Marshall Fine

Who's in it: Michelle Pfeiffer, Rupert Friend

What's it about: In early 20th century Paris, a wealthy courtesan (Pfeiffer) finds herself falling in love with a much younger man (Friend).

Cougar country:
Back before anyone had heard of cougars, French writer Colette was writing about the high-society prostitutes who prowled Paris. Pfeiffer (still gorgeous at 52!) is cool and calculating as a bedroom queen who can't believe she's falling for the son of a competitor (Kathy Bates). Friend has an emo pout as her lover and grows from spoiled boy to determined young man - but is he determined enough to win Pfeiffer? Their chemistry seems iffy, as love comes and goes in this unpredictable story - but the fashions have an over-the-top beauty.

Long story short: It's a little too stiff to touch your heart. 2 and a half stars
