Guiding Light's 72-Year Run Ends

September 18, 2009

The lights have dimmed for the longest running show on the air.

Daytime staple Guiding Light aired its last episode earlier today, concluding its 72-year run that predates television.

The soap opera's executive producer Ellen Wheeler said the finale couldn't tie up every loose end, which was done by design. "We need to let the audience know that Springfield is going to go on and that just because Guiding Light isn't on the air doesn't mean these lives don't go forward," she said.

The show started as a 15-minute serial on NBC Radio in January 1937 and debuted on CBS in 1952, focusing on the Bauer family in the fictional town of Springfield. Like most soaps, the show saw a large decline in ratings over the last decade. Despite a makeover last year — with much of the show shot outside the studio with handheld minicams — viewership didn't increase.

The cancellation was announced in April.

Former cast members include Hayden Panettiere, Brittany Snow, Mira Sorvino, Calista Flockhart, Taye Diggs and Kevin Bacon.

Did you watch the last episode? Do you feel it gave the show some closure? Talk about it -- or just share your favorite GL memory.

I watched guiding light for 22 years I have not missed a day of watching it, I sure will miss the show, is there any way that you can bring it back on the air, but without the gay parts,
-- Beverly

I took off work on their last day just to watch it. I also agree this show shouldn't of been cancelled. I refuse to watch gameshows, and I will not watch CBS shows anymore, they have lost a good viewer with this cancelation.
-- Veronica

i still am upset with cbs for taking it off. I will not ever watch cbs during the Old Time Slot that GL held. This is out of respect for GL. tv is a business and they could care less what we want. even though rating fell, there isnt much different than all other soaps. whey ax the one that has been there the longest. get someone in there that can run & produce it correctly
-- Joyce S
