Heath Ledger's Family Accepts Oscar for Matilda

February 23, 2009

As anticipated, Heath Ledger won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in Dark Knight. The Ledger family — his mother Sally Bell, father Kim Ledger and sister Kate Ledger — accepted the posthumous Oscar, on behalf of Heath's daughter Matilda, to a standing ovation. Members of the audience — including Angelina Jolie and Anne Hathaway — appeared teary eyed. Here's what his family said during their acceptance speech:

Father, Kim Ledger
First of all I'd have to say this is ever so humbling — being amongst such wonderful people in such a wonderful industry. Firstly I'd like to thank the Academy for recognising our son's amazing work, Warner Brothers, and Christopher Nolan in particular for allowing Heath the creative licence to develop and explore this crazy Joker character. To Steve Alexander, Heath's mentor, special friend and agent for 10 years, we love you Steve. This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here, his peers within an industry he so loved. Thank you.

Mother, Sally Bell
Heath was such a compassionate and generous soul who added so much excitement and inspiration to our lives. We have been truly overwhelmed by the honour and respect being bestowed upon him with this award. Tonight we are choosing to celebrate and be happy for what he has achieved.

Sister, Kate Ledger
Heath, we both knew what you had created in the Joker was extraordinarily special and had even talked about being here on this very day. We really wish you were, but we proudly accept this award on behalf of your beautiful Matilda. Thank you.

Michelle Williams wants to keep Matilda out of the spotlight for good reason. But I think she should have let Matilda go with her family.

To whatever.....by no means was this a "sympathy" oscar! Did you even see the movie? No one could've nailed that the way Heath did you ass!!!In the history of the Oscars only ONE other actor has won an Oscar from the grave. The odds were 100,000:1! No one expected him to win because he is dead, the odds werent even in his favor, so I ask you, with those odds, how was it a "sympathy" win? You my dear are an idiot. You should crawl under a rock and never come out. The world would be better off without your negativity!

Congrats to Nicole Sullivan and her husband, actor Jason Packham, on expecting baby No.2, a boy. Sorry to hear that Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's director's former GF was abused, etc.
