Inside the Obama Marriage
He thinks she's strong yet vulnerable and mysterious. She thinks he's smart, exotic and hot!
In the Jan 26. issue of Star — on sale now — we have an intimate peek behind closed doors at the tenderness, the conflict — and how America's new First Couple make it work.
It wasn't exactly love at first sight for Barack and Michelle Obama. When the attractive young Harvard Law student strolled into her Chicago law firm in 1989 to work for the summer, the whole office buzzed about his charm, intelligence and good looks — everyone, except Michelle. "I'm more of a skeptical kind," she later confessed. "I was thinking, 'Yeah, he's probably an idiot.'"
But their work relationship soon blossomed into a friendship, and then "it just took off from there," says Michelle.
But 16 years of marriage hasn't been without bumps. Barack and Michelle have clashed over many things, including finding a new school for daughters Malia and Sasha. According to an insider, "He thought public school would be a far better way to go, but Michelle is the boss. She put her foot down, and now the girls are at the private Sidwell Friends School."
When it comes to the girls, their parents don't always see eye to eye. The insider reveals that Michelle worries that with Barack as President, Malia and Sasha will be thrust into the public spotlight. He, meanwhile, is concerned that Michelle spends too much dolling the girls up in fancy dresses. "He doesn't want them looking like little princesses."
And he feels the same about his wife. The fashion plate First Lady is often compared to the iconic Jacqueline Kennedy, and in order to live up to that high standard, she's been spending a lot of money on designer clothes, says the insider. Just before the inauguration, she came home to their suite at The Hay-Adams hotel in Washington with loads of new purchases, including a very expensive pearl necklace — and Barack hit the roof!
"He was stunned at how much she had spent," says the insider.

If Mrs. Obama did not address the issue of style, she would be called a frump. If she goes out and buys some clothes - and by the way, she is representing ALL OF US - perhaps an allotment should be figured into the presidential budget - she is fashion-crazy....she worked all her adult life, brought home a lot of disposable income, and most likely spent very little on wardrobe. I am certain President Obama gifted Mrs. Obama with the pearls and is extremely proud and honored to have such a splendid partner and person of honor and dignity.

I am not a michelle fan at all, and her spending is way out of control. She needs to focus more on the economic crisis our country is in and how it is affecting most americans then out spending money so darn freely!

We african americans just made history a BLACK president. I think michelle obama and barack obama are a regular family. Everyone has bumps in their relationship so there is no reason not to try to work it out.
But for the clothes spending i have to agree with michelle girl you have good style. Mr. Barack you do as well. -- lullmzearringz¢¾
We have seen history in the making with this election and will continue to see it throughout his stay in the White House.
I hope that the pressures of the job as husband, father and president don't bring his and Michelle's family down a distructive path. I see nothing but good things for our nation and our commander in chief. Let's all remember that although he is all of the things (and more) that I mentioned above we need to also remember that he is a man and she a woman with all the flaws that that intails. However it seems that they have a good idea of who they are, what their personal flaws and limitations are and how their strength and love for one another got them where they are today. Let's hope they remember it too. -- Shay - Centralia WA |
