Theatergoers Just Not Into Katie Holmes

August 22, 2008

As Katie Holmes readies for her Broadway debut, the poster for her show is printed and ready to go. But it seems that Mrs. Tom Cruise isn't a big enough draw to fill seats.

Presales for tickets to All My Sons — which premieres Oct. 16, with previews beginning Sept. 18 — have been slower that expected. Although some people blame the economy, other Broadway shows — like Mamma Mia — are selling out.

"It did not sell like they had hoped for," a Broadway insider tells Star. "To the theatergoing crowd, generally an older audience, Katie's not a 'name' like Julia Roberts, whose run in Three Days of Rain sold out immediately. Katie hasn't done anything Broadway patrons recognize her for — except maybe marrying Tom Cruise."

In fact, the biggest draw for the play is Katie's costar John Lithgow, who has earned no fewer than five Tony Awards for his work on stage.

"In mailers sent to special members who get great discounts and great seats, they advertised 'Arthur Miller's first great success returns to Broadway starring John Lithgow,'" adds the source. "Katie's name is mentioned later because it was decided putting her name first was of no use. But when Three Days of Rain was marketed, Julia's name was at the top and it worked. The play was crap but everyone bought the tickets."

Despite the lackluster sales, Katie has dutifully been reporting to play practice in anticipation of the family drama, which is scheduled to run through Jan. 11.

Why do you think people are staying away? They can't afford it? They aren't into Katie? Tell us what you think.

Well she had to find some otu from that overbearing has-been husband of hers. Katie could do sooo much better.

I'm under the impression Katie is living off of Tom's name. I mean, what a catch she got! Right? Money, money, money! Forgot that he's a control freak that spouts off about religion! Money, money, money!

Gee Imagine that! Tom is probably lurking around making everyone feel uncomfortable with his Scientology mumbo-jumbo crap! Katie ruined any chance she had for a real career after she married Tom Wacko Cruise

Id pay to see John Lithgow. As for Katie? Not so much. She was well on her way to success before she chose to stand BEHIND her husband. Something Nicole did not do and is still very successful.
-- WillowRose

what did you think that because she married tom that we would run to see her in a play. how do we know that she can act on stage.

Katie should concentrate on raising her daughter. As far as her career goes, she has accomplished little by Hollywood standards. I can honestly say that I wouldn't spend a nickel of my hard earned money to see her or her cult promoting husband. In fact,I've banned watching anything made by Tom Cruise. He makes my stomache turn and she--only known as the other half of TomKat--played right into his hands...
