Made of Honor

By Marshall Fine

Rating:

Who's in it: Patrick Dempsey, Michelle Monaghan

What's it about: A wealthy bachelor (Dempsey) takes his best friend (Monaghan) for granted - until she gets engaged and asks him to be her maid of honor.

Familiar: When Julia Roberts did this, it was called "My Best Friend's Wedding." This one - with the pixie-ish Monaghan as the best friend and Dempsey as the disruptive MOH (that's pronounced "moe") - isn't nearly as funny, unfortunately. Not that it doesn't have its charm. "McDreamy" Dempsey can be romantic and soulful with the best of them, and Monaghan is like some delicious dessert you want to gobble down with a spoon. But the script is fatally low on actual jokes, and as charming as Dempsey is, he can't flash that smile to make it all better. Plus the film spends far too much time in New York before getting to Scotland, where at least there are kilts to laugh at.

Long story short: You won't want to catch the bouquet at this wedding.
