Michelle Williams Makes Public Statement

February 1, 2008

Ten days after Heath Ledger's death, Michelle Williams has broken her silence with words of grief and hope for the 2-year-old daughter she shared with the late actor.

"Please respect our need to grieve privately," said Michelle. "My heart is broken. I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day."

The 27-year-old actress fell in love with Heath when they played husband and wife in 2005's Brokeback Mountain. After moving to New York, they welcomed their first daughter, Matilda Rose, in October 2005.

"His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still," said Michelle. "She will be brought up in the best memories of him."

In an other effort to help remember the gifted life of Heath, Hollywood has banded together in an attempt to stop a video of the actor at a party where drugs were being taken from airing on TV.

Entertainment Tonight has decided to pull the story "out of respect for Heath Ledger's family," but the overwhelming reaction from some of Hollywood's powerful film industry figures — including a public relations firm that represents many of the stars Entertainment Tonight depends upon for stories — had a major effect.

Heath, 28, died in his Manhattan apartment from what authorities suspect to be a possible drug overdose. The cause of his death is still pending the outcome of toxicology tests.
