Modern Family

By Marshall Fine

Rating:

Wednesday, Sept. 23, 9PM ABC

Here's the freshest comedy of the year: a multigenerational tale of three couples, all of whom appear to be part of a mock-documentary about family life. Ed O'Neill is the older guy married to a hot young wife (hottie Sofia Vergara, who is also very funny). Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell are the parents of a teen and tweens (with Burrell hilarious as the guy who thinks he's the "cool" dad). And Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson are the gay couple who have just adopted a Vietnamese baby. It's one of the only sitcoms this year that doesn't feel like it's forced or a formula. Instead, this comedy, from the creators of "Frasier" and "Wings," finds the laughs in cringe-worthy moments and the silly things humans are prone to.
