Q&A: British Pop Star Mika
It’s been a year since Lebanese-born, London-bred pop singer Mika released his debut album, Life In Cartoon Motion — and what a ride it’s been. With hits like “Grace Kelly” and “Big Girl (You Are Beautiful),” which was featured on Ugly Betty, Mika has gone on to win three World Music Awards and has been nominated for countless more, including a Grammy for the song “Love Today.” Currently, he’s on his third sold-out tour of North America.
So what are fans supposed to do if they didn’t get a ticket to any of your shows before they sold out?
Buy it on eBay, even if it costs a fortune.
You’re like Hannah Montana.

Never mind. So what can fans expect from your live shows? Any exciting, crazy surprises?
From my shows, you can expect anything from, you know, dancers, to 18-foot puppets, to balloons, to confetti. We really go for it. You get your money’s worth.
Any city you were looking forward to playing in?
I think Los Angeles is phenomenal. More than that, I think Atlanta is absolutely f@%#ing brilliant. It’s such a great gig city. Same with Chicago and Boston.
You were nominated for a Grammy. Even though you didn’t win, how excited were you to be considered?
It’s a nice nod, but my tour excites me more than anything. Having the privilege to go around the world eight times, to go to every country you’ve ever dreamed of, to sell out tickets, is such an incredible situation to be in.
Since you travel all over the world for work, where do you go on vacation?
I just came back from the Maldives. Also, I intend on going back to Asia for a hiking trip with backpacks and everything. I also went canyoning in the Middle East.
Does everyone recognize you when you go to these countries?
You’d be astonished the places I get recognized. Having never been to Hong Kong and then getting out of the luggage terminal and getting mobbed is one of the most hysterical moments in my life. Standing at a mobile phone shed and this group of five people singing me my songs, it’s really quite amazing. It’s always a compliment and for the right reasons.
You’re recording a new album now. Is it anything like your last or are you looking to branch out with a different sound?
I’m just not gonna say. I’m being extremely secretive about it.
So you can’t reveal anything?
Nothing, nothing, nothing.
Are you performing any of the new material live?
I’m singing one [new song] live. It’s called “How Much Do You Love Me?” and it’s been going great. You’ve got to watch out for yourself and not let things go out.
Were you surprised by your success with Life in Cartoon Motion? You’ve become an international star!
I was hoping for success, or else I would not have taken such an enormous risk, going to the record company and saying, “I don’t want any or your involvement, just the money and the freedom to make the record that I need.” If you do that, you only get one chance. I was banking on at least getting to the point where I would be able to make a second record.
But you must have known as you were recording songs that certain ones were likely going to be huge hits.
You get a fun feeling. That’s the feeling you’re always chasing, whether it’s a sad song or a euphoric song. It still has to give you that tingling in your lower back, like you have to go to the bathroom!
