Angelina Opens Up About Her Mother's Death

In an emotional interview, Angelina Jolie sat down with Today and Dateline’s Ann Curry and admitted, “It has has been a heavy year,” with the loss of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, and the newest addition to her household, adopted son Pax.

“I suppose I’m very aware of time and of memories and enjoying life – not just doing the right thing and being a useful person – which I believe that I am,” said a weepy-eyed Jolie. “I want to be a great mom like my mom was. And I want to also do the things I love.”

Jolie has spent the past month promoting her newest film, A Mighty Heart, produced by her partner Brad Pitt. In the film, Jolie plays Mariane Pearl, the real-life widower of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and brutally murdered in 2002 by Al Qaeda terrorists while on assignment in Pakistan.

“Mariane lost her husband in a way that is not natural and unfair,” Jolie told Curry, admitting Mariane’s heartbreak was different then what she experienced when she lost her mom. “It’s very different...I just haven’t gone through what she’s been through – I don’t know what it’s like to have lost my husband and somebody do that to me.”

Jolie adds,“I lost my mom. It’s a natural thing for a child to lose a parent. I lost my mom too young, but it happens. And I’m happy she’s out of pain, ‘cause I love her.” Jolie was raised mostly by her mother and currently remains estranged from her father, Jon Voight.

Jolie's interview will air on Dateline NBC at 10 pm/ET on Wednesday, May 23. Click here to see a preview on MSNBC.
