Stephen Colbert To Run For President?

October 12, 2007

When CNN's Larry King accused Stephen Colbert of using his new book, I am America (And So Can You), as a platform to run for president, Colbert was the first to jump on the notion. He said he would most likely seek a nomination from both parties!

While King saw the gesture of running as the face of the Democrats and the Republicans as a "cop out," Colbert countered that running for both parties would be the ultimate act of "courage" because he "could lose twice!"

"I'd let the people decide what party I belong in, Larry. I don't dictate the people's actions," Colbert told King about running a double campaign, adding he would probably run on a state-by-state basis, starting with South Carolina, his native state, as a "favorite son."

When King pointed his thumb upward and asked if Colbert was planning to run for top office, Colbert said, "You mean God? No, go down one notch."

So will Colbert ever consider running for vice president? The funny man, who has his own talk show on Comedy Central, The Colbert Report, said, "You know who has actually offered me a vice presidential slot? This is in all seriousness. He has come on my show three times and each time he offered it to me: Huckabee. Governor Huckabee offered it to me on the show and when a certain other person named Hannity, on a different network, asked him who he liked on this person's show, he actually said I already made a promise to Stephen Colbert."

Colbert also added, "I'm deeply, deeply weird."
