Joaquin Phoenix: Rap Star

January 16, 2009

When Joaquin Phoenix announced his retirement from acting, who knew he would pursue a career as a rapper!

Last fall, the Academy Award nominee said he was quitting acting, proudly displaying the words "Bye" and "Good" that he had scrawled across his knuckles. The disheveled star added that he'd be trying to launch a music career, but he failed to mentioned he'd be going down the Snoop Dogg route!

Joaquin is working on a rap album that will be produced by none other than music mogul Diddy, says Hollywood Reporter. His first live performance as a hip-hop artist is scheduled to take place tonight at a Las Vegas club. Additionally, his brother-in-law — fellow Oscar nominee Casey Affleck — will direct a documentary about Joaquin's attempt to become a rapper. Filming begins at tonight's show.

In the Jan. 19 issue of Star, we reported that Joaquin — who's rumored to have fallen off the wagon — been been struggling to hold it together since the death of his friend Heath Ledger last January. Joaquin's brother River also died of a drug overdose, in 1993, and when Heath passed, a source says, "All those bad feelings flooded back. He flipped out."

Perhaps he'll write a Grammy-winning hip-hop song about the experience.

Would you buy a rap album from Joaquin? How about see the documentary about his transition from screen to stage? Talk back below.

I hope Joaquin someday comes back to acting. I love the roles he has played.
I sure do not know what it is like to walk in his shoes but I hope those close to him are helping him.
I do not know, but surely Heath would be pissed-off if something preventable happens to Joaquin .

he's freaking crazy!!!
-- sup bitches?

Are you kidding me? Why is it that the whole world is trying to rap now. I agree with Chris S STAY WHERE YOU ARE. You made it big there for a reason. And why the hell is Diddy supporting this? Then again Diddy would produce a trio of cats if given the oppurtunity.

I am a huge Joaquin fan, have been for the past twelve years, although he can be eccentric at times I find him to be very sexy and fascinating. He is an incredible actor, and if rapping is something he wants to pursue, I wish him the best. Although I do hope he returns to acting, and yes, I would watch his documentary. For those close to him, please give him the help needed for his sobriety and mental state, I would truly hate for his story to have a tragic ending.
