Shia LaBeouf: I'll Never Fully Recover from Accident

April 14, 2009

It's been nearly nine months since Shia LaBeouf severely injured his hand in an early morning car crash, but the actor says he'll never fully recover.

Last July, the Transformers star's Ford truck flipped over (twice!) in West Hollywood when another driver allegedly ran a red light. The actor — who refused a breathalyzer test at the scene and was charged with a misdemeanor DUI — crushed his left hand so badly that one finger had no bone in it.

"I'm on my third surgery," Shia told Entertainment Weekly in a new interview. "I've had screws and plates put in. They put a screw in one of my knuckles. And they shaved a piece of bone off my hip and made a [bone for my] finger out of it. [However], my middle finger is still crooked as a ... noodle, so they've gotta straighten it out and put a screw in it."

Despite all the surgeries, he won't regain complete usage of this hand that Star exclusively reported was at risk for possible amputation. "Probably about 80-something percent, he said to the mag. "I'll be able to make a fist again. There's a knuckle I'll never be able to move again, but that's probably the only permanent damage, other than the scarring."

At the time, Shia was filming the $200 million sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which comes out June 24. As the lead in the film, production was held up until he got back to work — two weeks later after his initial surgery. Shia says he got a kick from his Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull costar Harrison Ford to return to work.

"Harrison called me on the phone and said, 'Hey, are you okay?' I said, 'Yeah, I'm good' He said, 'Well, then you need to get back to work.' I said, 'Are you serious?' He said, 'That's the way this cookie crumbles.' So I went back to work. The show doesn't stop for anybody."

I was in an accident when I was 6 months pregnant, and I'll never forget that day. Because it scared me so much and I thought I was going to lose my baby, so I know exactly how hard it is to not fully recover from the terrible accidents.
