UPDATE: ANNA'S SON GETTING SECOND AUTOPSY
A private pathologist from the United States is expected to perform a second autopsy on Daniel Wayne Smith, son of Anna Nicole Smith. "It is nothing unusual for families to want their own pathologist to confirm or look for something that may have been overlooked" in the autopsy, according to head coroner Linda Virgill in the Bahamas. The Smith family's pathologist will arrive on Saturday and will perform the autopsy on Sunday, Virgill said.
While police who were called to scene did not find anything in Smith's room to suggest a crime had been committed or evidence of drugs, according to authorities, a jury inquest is scheduled to begin Oct. 23. According to Anna's Bahamian attorney, Michael Scott, "She fully wants this process to take place and she wishes the public to not jump to conclusions and to wait for the conclusion of the proceedings."
UPDATE: THIRD PERSON IN ANNA NICOLE'S ROOM REVEALED
Posted Sept. 14, 2006
Anna Nicole Smith's lawyer in the Bahamas has revealed that the third person in the room when Anna's 20-year-old son Daniel died was Smith's attorney Howard K. Stern. Scott said Anna Nicole Smith and Stern continued efforts to revive Smith even after he had been proclaimed dead by staff at Doctors Hospital in Nassau. Attorney Michael Scott added, "Anna Nicole was so distraught at the loss of Daniel that she refused to leave his side, and it was necessary to sedate her in order to check her out of the hospital."
"CODE BLUE" RESPONSE COULDN'T SAVE ANNA NICOLE'S SON
Posted Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 5 pm ET
Staff at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, Bahamas made a frantic — but tragically, unsuccessful — attempt to save the life of Anna Nicole Smith's 20-year-old son Daniel on Sunday, Sept. 10, Star has learned.
The behind-the-scenes dramatics of the resuscitation attempt were revealed during a Sept. 12 press conference at the medical facility. "Daniel Wayne Smith arrived at the hospital late evening around 11:00 pm on Saturday, September 9, 2006," a follow-up press release stated. "He spent the entire evening in the room and remained as a visitor with his mother and newly born sister. On Sunday, September 10 at 6:20 am, it was noted by one our Associates that Daniel was attending to his mother's comfort. Subsequently, he was observed to be asleep on multiple occasions.
"At 9:38 am the nurse was called, following which physicians on the floor were immediately summoned. Recognizing Daniel was unresponsive, they initiated CPR. A Code Blue was called and the team responded from the Emergency Room. Resuscitative efforts using Advanced Life Support protocol continued for twenty-two minutes, without response. He was pronounced dead at 10:05 am. Bahamian law requires autopsies to be performed on any unexplained death. Consistent with this requirement, standard protocol was engaged to transfer Daniel to the Rand Lab." As of mid-afternoon on Tuesday, Daniel's body remained in the local morgue; the final autopsy report was scheduled to be released thursday or friday.
It was reported that Anna Nicole Smith was waiting to return Daniel's body to the United States — but the questioned remained how long a wait she faced, and whether or not the final toxicologist's report would include any reference to illegal drugs. "The body remains the property of the coroner until such time as that office decides to release it to the next-of-kin," Asst. Commisioner Reginald Ferguson of the Nassau Police told Star. "If there is suspicion of a crime being committed, the coroner will ask the police to investigate. Depending on the situation, the police may or may not require the body to remain in the country."
