Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
Rating:
Who's in it: Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey
What's it about: A pregnant and abused teen (Gabourey Sidibe) finds self-esteem in a literacy class.
Powerful: The most buzzed-up movie out of this year's Sundance festival, this wrenching, compelling story looks at one young woman's struggle to overcome illiteracy and abuse of all kinds: sexual, physical and mental. The film features an Oscar-worthy performance by Mo'Nique; the comedienne is almost unrecognizable as the girl's vicious, domineering mother. Sidibe is a real discovery, capable of a surprising performance that has depth and heart. Her journey from poverty and hopelessness to a world of possibility is bleak at times - but packs a punch unlike any movie you'll see this year. No wonder Oprah and Tyler Perry got on board.
