Fool's Gold

By Marshall Fine

Rating:

Who's in it: Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson

What's it about: A treasure hunter (McConaughey) convinces his ex-wife (Hudson) and her new boss to look for a rich sunken ship.

Deep water: An incredibly buff McConaughey takes a lot of punishment in this romantic adventure-comedy that's short on laughs and long on mean-spirited, if cartoonish, violence. He and Hudson don't have much chemistry playing a recently divorced couple looking for a lost Spanish fortune in the Bahamas, while working on Donald Sutherland's yacht. Sutherland is always good and McConaughey certainly has energy.

There's some gorgeous scuba-diving footage but the jokes fall flat and too many gags end with McConaughey getting punched or smashed in the face. Hudson is along for the ride, usually to roll her eyes at another of McConaughey's outrageous lies.

Long story short: This undersea comedy won't float your boat.
