Celeb Sightings! Hot Gossip! Star WANTS THE SCOOP

Selena Gomez Named U.S.'s Youngest UNICEF Ambassador

Selena Gomez is bringing her magic touch to West Africa.

On the same day UNICEF announced that the Wizards of Waverly Place star has been named the youngest UNICEF Ambassador in the United States, the 17-year-old touched down in West Africa for her first official field mission. During this trip, the actress/singer will travel to Ghana — which has one of the highest mortality rates of children under five — to witness first-hand the stark conditions kids are living in.

"Every day 25,000 children die from preventable causes. I stand with UNICEF in the belief that we can change that number from 25,000 to zero," Selena said in a statement.

Taylor Lautner's summer love also been sharing details of her travels on Twitter, telling her fans, "I'm going to be in Africa for a week. I can't wait to tell you all about the trip!"

This morning when she landed, she posted this photo and Tweeted: "Landed in Africa! Off to work!"

The ambitious Texan joins long list of stars who have embraced UNICEF through the years, including newlywed Alyssa Milano and new mama Sarah Jessica Parker. And Selena seems to be doing a lot more than some of her peers, who can currently be found Twittering about ever item of food they're putting in their body (hey, Brenda Song) and how unattractive they think they are (Miley Cyrus).
