Star Told You First: Gossip Girl Spin-Off Details

January 15, 2009

It has been confirmed that the much talked about Gossip Girl spin-off will focus on a teenage version of Lily van der Woodsen — something Star exclusively reported over a month ago!

Warner Bros. announced yesterday that the new CW pilot will center on Lily (played by soon-to-be-divorcee Kelly Rutherford) and take place in the '80s. The teen — who will be know by her maiden name Lily Rhodes — will have a falling out with her parents and start bunking with her sister, the black sheep of the family.

"Used to being a 'have,' attending a wealthy Montecito boarding school and living the high life, Lily is now forced into being a 'have not,' living deep in the Valley she once made fun of, and going to public school," a Warner Bros. statement read. "Caught between two worlds, Lily dives into the fast-paced Sunset Strip and the Hollywood lifestyle of the '80s, journeying over the hill to a world of wealth and excess that used to be her own."

And, yes, Rufus will be a big part of the show. They meet and have a fling that will result in Lily's secret pregnancy, but "that wouldn't be for quite a while in the run of the show," the show's co-creator/exec producer Josh Schwartz said.

Casting has started for the pilot, which will be shot on location in Los Angeles.

"We didn't want to upset the chemistry of our [Gossip Girl] cast — all of whom are crucial to the show," the show's other co-creator/exec producer Stephanie Savage said of their decision not to take popular actors away from Gossip Girl to start a new series.

Star told you first — on Dec. 11 — about the details of the spin-off, including that it "will focus on the early romance between Lily and Rufus" and "follow the high society and rock 'n' roll lifestyle." We also said that "two new actors will be hired to play the young Lily and Rufus" as not to upset the current balance of Gossip Girl.

The pilot will air as a Gossip episode on May 11.

Wow. . tv really sucks now a days. I wish they would quit the spin offs and just give me my own show. i could come up with a pretty sweet show. Im so tired of reruns and spin offs. we need something new and original.

If Kelly is getting divorced, she would be free to hook up with Ed Westwick-she likes the younger men and they would make an attractive couple.

Oh, isn't Ed Westick so cute. He is awesome. Why is he kissing Jessica Szohr? She isn't right for him. But I know who is. Leighton Meester, that's who! You need to understand that Leighton is right for you. I mean come on. I've seen the way you glance at her.

I'll stick with Gossip Girl thanks. I'm tired of spin offs.

Sounds good. I hope they hire someone good for the roles. I wouldn't want them to ruin the good name Gossip Girl has made.
