The Invention of Lying
Rating:
Who's in it: Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe
What's it about: In a world where everyone tells only the truth, one man changes his destiny by making things up for the first time.
Whoppers: His name is Mark and he's played by Ricky Gervais ("Ghost Town"). His lies - about everything from his bank account to world history - captivate and fool everyone around him. Now what? You might say the same thing about this comedy, which can never seem to find its feet or sustain a line of jokes. Gervais is a really funny guy - which is why this film, which he co-wrote and co-directed, is such a disappointment. He's got a cast that includes cameos by everyone from Edward Norton to Philip Seymour Hoffman and a cast that includes Louis CK, Garner and Lowe - but he just can't come up with enough laughs to make this movie satisfying.
Long story short: We'd lying if we said this one-joke film works.
