In celebration of the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth comes this four-part Masterpiece period drama.

It opens years after the Pride and Prejudice author’s death, when her sister, Cassandra (Hawes), is on a mission to burn all of Jane’s letters in order to protect the family’s reputation.

When Cassandra learns the husband of Jane’s late friend Eliza is on his deathbed, she rushes to his home, desperate to destroy the missives Jane sent his wife.

The trip is the framework for a series of flashbacks to the sisters’ earlier life (Ferran plays Jane, while Synnøve Karlsen is young Cassandra), which Austen fans will instantly recognize as inspiration for her novels — there are overbearing clergymen, spiteful in-laws and a desperate young woman destined for penniless spinsterhood…unless a match can be arranged with a local doctor (Alfred Enoch). This intelligent and thought- provoking series will have both Janeites and Austen newbies swooning.

Miss Austen | Official Trailer | Premieres Sun., May 4, at 9 p.m. ET, on PBS
