Pop Music, Contemporary Dialog: ‘Juliet & Romeo’ Modernizes A Shakespeare Classic
An updated version of Shakespeare’s classic keeps the star-crossed lovers, but loses the iambic pentameter and adds pop music from Grammy-winning composer E. Kidd Bogart.
In 1301 Italy, Juliet (Clara Rugaard) and Romeo (Jamie Ward) are from feuding families in small-town Verona — but you knew that. By reimagining the beloved story with modern dialogue, some fabulous musical numbers and a sumptuous production, the filmmakers no doubt hope to attract the huge audience that made Wicked a box-office sensation.
